Working for The New Zealand Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Inside Out Productions collaborated with architecture firm Pattersons and Associates to design the New Zealand pavilion in Frankfurt. Our contribution was to introduce key elements such as the flooded room, the stars above, the rain, the moon and the live actor that interacted with the set.

It was the most popular Pavilion in the history of the Frankfurt Bookfair with an estimated 90,000+ visitors.

As Creative Directors our role also included writing and directing the pavilion’s 20mins multi-media experience which attracted so much media and public attention. Written in consultation with Witi Ihimaera, Emily Perkins and Paula Green, it celebrated Maori storytelling, NZ Poetry, Fiction, Graphic Novels and Children’s Books, along with our stunning landscape, which such an inspiration to our writing.

In the breaks between the live performances by Matu Ngarapo that formed part of the multi media experience, we presented works by celebrated visual artists Ann Shelton, Jae Hoon Lee, and Fiona Pardington.

Inside Out also project-managed and produced the entire event in Germany drawing on 25 years experience producing work internationally.

Click here to view 10 minute clip of the live experience

2011 saw the Rugby World Cup come to New Zealand. Inside Out Productions were commissioned to organise the city wide event for the Auckland Opening of the Rugby World Cup.

This collaborative event was of a huge scale with over 100 performers, an original score and the largest fireworks and lighting show ever seen in New Zealand.

Fireworks are erupting above the city. Tugboats are dancing in the harbour. Men are seemingly leaping down tall buildings in a single bound. A pipe band is playing on the museum steps. A Maori warrior is spinning a bullroarer atop a silo on the other side of the city. A gospel choir is singing it from the rooftops.

This — All Lit Up, the wildly ambitious musical and fireworks finale to last night’s RWC opening ceremony — is something you could only take all in via the multi-camera magic of television.

And like the Eden Park wonder of visuals and choreography a few minutes earlier, it is quite breathtaking …

2011 saw the launch of this dream as a theatre with two flexi-form performance spaces. This new theatre to house the young up and coming theatre companies and nurture creativity in Auckland. Inside Out collaborated with a plethora of artists to show the audience how far the building had come and how much possibility lay before them.

In August 2010, the giant Rugby ball venue was once again inflated, this time on Sydney Harbour. This was the Ball’s fourth and final publicity tour before next year’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Over 26,000 people visited the site during the 10 days the ball sat on Circular Quay, between the city’s most famous landmarks (the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge), including a record 3,834 attendees on its final day.

“I can honestly say this is absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s only once you get inside and see how big it is that it makes you realise how important the Rugby World Cup is for New Zealand in 2011.”

Where will it land next? Watch this space…

Town Hall 2010

Neil Finn approached IOP and ask us to visualize the Intriguer character as part of their Auckland concert.

After discussions with the band and Michael Leunig, IOP created a mischievous character who disrupted the concert and added real danger and unpredictability to proceedings.

He caused lights to blow up the in the grid sending sparks flying. He materialized as a projected shadow having an effect on the perfectly mapped Town Hall organ.

It flapped like a curtain, and appeared to bend around his face and hands. He turned the ‘virtual’ organ pipes into pistons and ultimately caused them crashed down at the climax during the finale song “Don’t Dream it’s Over”

A wonderful evening that received rave reviews.

Inside Out, working with video installation experts from both Australia and New Zealand, created artwork on both the inside and the outside of The Town Hall in Auckland. The building was mapped in 3D and literally projected back on itself. The Town Hall became a lollipop house, a giant sandcastle, and a London tube station, amongst other things. The outside free show ran for three nights on a seven minute loop changing every minute. Inside became a full immersion experience for the 500+ invited VIP guests.
